John 17:1-10

Jesus glorified God on earth by finishing the work that God gave him to do (v. 4). Glorifying God through fulfilling His purposes should be our motto.

(v. 4) I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. We also should fulfill the purpose he gave us on this earth and glorify him through that.

Knowing God and Jesus, whom he sent is eternal life (v 3)

Jesus says that he brought glory to his father by completing the work his father gave him. Jesus is very certain that he completed his work. We should glorify God by fulfilling HIS purpose.

God made us in this world for a purpose. He has given us a set of works to accomplish in our time, similar to how Jesus came to this world to fulfill His fathers purpose.
If we knew our calling and we work towards our purpose then we would glorify God, similar to how Jesus did. So let’s ask His strength and guidance in identifying our calling and work towards the fulfillment of our purpose for Him to be glorified through us.

Believe in God to get eternal life.If you obey God’s word, you are also children of God.

“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.” – What a great gift for his children.

Jesus says that he did what he was told to do by God. Jesus made this world a better place.

In this Jesus talks about eternal life. And eternal life is knowing and believing the one true God.

3 ஒன்றான மெய்த்தேவனாகிய உம்மையும் நீர் அனுப்பினவராகிய இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவையும் அறிவதே நித்தியஜீவன். யோவான் 17 :3 – knowing God is not about
…memorizing Bible verses
…attending Bible quizes
…attaining theological degrees
…studying Church history
….doing full time ministry
….taking positions in the church committees
….organizing gospel meetings
…taking positions like Bishop/pastor
…researching about whether He is black or white
– all these may help but we still could remain knowing nothing about Him
– if we know Him our hearts will get filled by Him. There will be no room for flushly, worldly or satanic activities

1. Earthly Mission
-I gave them the words that you gave me and they accepted them, …and they believed that you sent me (v8). I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do (v4).
2. Eyewitness (Witness)
-Jesus himself testified about John the Baptist “John was a lamp that burned and gave light” (John 5:35). Jesus testifies about the Disciples to Father “I have revealed you to them, they have obeyed your word, they have accepted your word, they believed that I came from you, they believed that you sent me” (vv 6, 8).
-Are we living a life such a way so Jesus himself can testify about us to Father at the time of judgement?
3. Eternal Life
-Father has granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to them (v2). Eternal life is “We know the Father, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he has sent” (v3).

Vs 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

(V8) “I gave them the word”: the word is given to us, we have to take the next step….(V8) “they accepted the word”: not just hearing the word of God, it’s accepting it to our heart.
(V6)”they obeyed the word”: obey his word that is given to us.

And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God (v.3)The only and true God
—————————-
1. The only: He is unique. There is no one like him. He is unparalleled, unsurpassed and unrivaled. He is in a class by Himself. None can match Him in any of his attributes. He is I AM. He is in a category by Himself. He is exclusive. The ONLY GOD. (v.3) and the world is stunned into silence in front of Him. That should be our proper response.
2. True: Genuinely right. Perfectly correct. 2+2=4. No glitches. There is no imperfectness in Him. He has genuine GOD-ness to Him (like a 24 carat gold is genuine gold – a true gold). There is not a whit of phoniness nor shadow in Him. He is TRUE there is not a speck of deceptiveness in Him. “True” God is a fitting moniker.
Jesus say “you” and “your”– referring to God – 24 times in our reading today. In 10 verses! More than twice per verse.
This “the only” and “true” God has sent us his son Jesus. Knowing this is an eternal bliss (v4) – it fills the deepest hunger of our souls with eternal life. Everlasting vivacity with “our God” who is the only true.

God talks about eternal life and knowing God, so we should be close to him and cherish his words within us.
