Judges 17

Micah’s Idols: It takes courage to admit our own mistakes and come out clean. At the same time we should be careful about what becomes our idols.

This small chapter illustrates how even the Levites have forgotten their calling and in fact their God. It is true including the Levites “all the people did what was right in their own eyes” (v 6).

“In those days there was no king in Israel; all the people did was right in their own eyes.”God’s plan for the Israelites is that they should become a blessing for others. However, Israel was a failure. They started doing what was right in their own eyes.
What is the implication for us today?
We have to carefully examine our lives to see whether we are pleasing and honoring God in our lives.

Own eyes. This is the crux of the issue. Not only that. There is a hint there ‘there was no king’. May be both are related. When people distrust authority then they take their own-selves as the final authority.
In a fall world, there are times that we need to have authority. Anarchy is not a biblical idea. In fact the Bible says we need an authority but it is silent on how much and what form. It understands this as a necessary evil in our fallen world.
In our times this is not a popular idea which is understandably so. There is no trust for authority. No one who is a leader is trusted. But then we we are back to the Judges times. Avan avan Than than valliyil. This how the whole human race is lost

Levites were given 48 towns along with pasturelands among the Israelites. They were supposed to stand before the Lord and Minister Him, and to bless in His name. They were supposed to remind the Israelites of God’s law.
-I think Levites were miserably failed in their duties. We read about a Levite after a very long time in this chapter and he too agreed to be a priest at Micah’s house where Micah had the idol and ephod.
-(v6) In those days everyone did as they saw fit, not because they had no king but Yahweh was NOT with Israelites!

(v. 6) Everyone did what was right in his own eyes: The Israelites did evil things in the sight of the Lord. Proverbs 14:12 says- There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. When we follow our own way without even thinking about it then we are ruined. We can see what happened to Adam and Eve when they didn’t follow God’s word. We need to follow God’s way, not our own way. Proverb 3:(5-7)tells us to trust our Lord wholeheartedly and not to lean upon our own understanding; to fear God and depart from evil, and not to be wise in our own eyes. Only God has the right to decide what is good and evil. We need meditate more on the word of God to know what is good and evil.

Nothing but total depravity; all in the name of the Lord!

Jesus Christ is our king. We are part of His Kingdom; Kingdom of Heaven. In a specific day, how much do I realise that I am under His Kingdom? Do I have idols?…things that I respect more than God? When I do this analysis, I realise I am also like those Israelites…. going in and out. In Tamil we say ‘மனம் ஒரு குரங்கு’😄I conclude, without the help of Holy Spirit, I could never succeed to get focused on Him and His Kingdom.
