Are you a disciple?
There are two incidents mentioned in this passage. In the first, a scribe says he
wants to follow Jesus. Jesus tells him, "the son of man has no place
to lay his head", meaning that he had no worldly possessions. He might
have said that knowing this man's desire for material blessings. Here again we find
that there is no biblical support for the popular belief that following Christ puts
us on a path of prosperity. In the second a man wants to bury his father first.
Jesus replied, "Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead",
emphasizing that he must have a willing heart to sacrifice all worldly relationship
to have a relationship with Him.
Paul who fought a good fight and finished his course preached this,
"...we must go through much tribulation to enter into the kingdom of God" (Acts
14:22). He also wrote this to timothy, "Yea, and all that
will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." (II Tim 3:12)
Jesus, in his sermon on the mount said, "...narrow is that which
leadeth unto life and few there be that find it" (Matt 7:14). It's very
clear, only a few will even find the gate!
We see two groups of people who followed Jesus. One admired the authority with which
he taught and the other came for the miracles. There is a third group, disciples.
One ready to leave all his earthly possessions, deny himself and follow Him. (Luke
14:26-27).Every man must count the cost of following Christ before making a decision
to become his disciple. (Luke 14:28).
It is easy to be one among the first two groups, it's a wide gate and many are on
that path but have you found the narrow gate?
